Project description:
APPLICATION BACKGROUND
Ecological systems reveal a surprising amount of resilience with respect to disturbances. In this project, the potential (i.e., logically possible) and real (i.e., observable in existing systems) influence of biodiversity on resilience shall be investigated. The planned activities are two-fold: first, clarify what artificial dynamical systems need in order to exhibit certain amounts of resilience; second, find traces of their properties in existing systems. For this, simulation methods and field studies shall be linked together.
CONTRIBUTION TO THE MISSION OF MODUS
The formalization of core functionality of ecosystems make it possible to find minimal subsystems enabling those functionality on a purely abstract and logical level. The idea is that this gives hint what to look for in real systems.
RESULTS
First steps have been undertaken to build a simple, patch-based simulation engine. In that engine, individuals, resources, and disturbances can be investigated in a landscape built from patches.
